Management of Streptococcus Cases in School and Home Environments: Guidelines from EODY

The National Public Health Organization of Greece (EODY) has recently issued updated guidelines for managing streptococcus cases in schools and homes. With the increase in cases observed in recent weeks, it’s important to know the appropriate prevention and management measures.
Basic Guidelines for Parents and Schools
-
Stay home: Children with symptoms such as fever, sore throat, or rash should not attend school.
-
Proper hand hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
-
Respiratory hygiene: Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or with the inside of the elbow.
-
Avoid sharing personal items: Do not share cups, plates, and utensils.
When Medical Advice is Needed
Seek medical advice if your child shows:
- Persistent fever
- Severe sore throat
- Rash
- Difficulty swallowing
- Swollen glands in the neck
Management in the School Environment
According to EODY, school closures are not recommended due to streptococcus cases. Instead, the following is suggested:
- Strengthening hygiene measures
- Regular cleaning of frequently touched surfaces
- Adequate ventilation of classrooms
- Informing parents about symptom recognition
Treatment and Return to School
Children diagnosed with streptococcal infection can return to school after completing at least 24 hours of antibiotic treatment and are fever-free.
Early recognition and appropriate management of streptococcus cases are essential for protecting children’s health and preventing the spread of infection in the community.
